  1. How should they be positioned? When I took the old shoes off I had different springs on each wheel (hence the new springs) and on one wheel I had 2 springs on the button of a shoe? Are there any photos kicking around? S
  2. So I have recently changed my drums and shoes on the rear of my Defender 90 (1986 CSW). All seemed fine and didn't have any problems after doing it until a few days ago. I let the handbrake off to role backwards down a hill and nothing, it just sat there and didn't move. Ended up having to stick it in reverse to encourage it! Jacked it up and the rear drivers side wheel is fine, spins forward and backwards with no problems. Rear passenger won't spin backward but will spin forward. Adjusted the adjuster so it was completely disengaged and it seemed fine again. Reversed off the drive, braked and then it locked up again . Im also getting a pulsing through the brake pedal when braking. Is this springs (I do have a new set for the rear axle), adjuster or is it the piston? I was planning to change the springs anyway but if I need todo more I would rather just do it all in one move. Cheers Stephen
  3. Thanks for all the advice about the swap! Is there anything I should check or change while I have the replacement box off the car? Its code is 28D381718E. I'm thinking a cross drilled input gear? New seals as well, also should I get bearing for the new input gear? If so are they an easy change? Cheers S
  4. Ive found myself a LT230 from a discovery 300TDi, just wondering how much will be involved in getting this to fit my LT77 gearbox and getting the handbrake working? If Im right it should be a straight swap in terms of fitting its just the handbrake that will need sorted? Cheers
  5. Think I might end up adding soundproofing as well. Have been looking at options, also been looking to sort all the leaks, might spend a long weekend when its sunny fixing the leaks and making the noise go away! S
  6. So I think going to a 1.2 transfer box is the best option for me. When I was out today I took more notice of the noise and how it sounds when I push it up to 70mph on the speedo, the car isn't soundproofed at all and when I listen now I think a lot of it is road noise and not engine noise. So now all I need a LT230 transfer box with a 1.2 ratio! (and need to work out how to change them... S
  7. Sorry this info took longer than planned but here it is! Doing 60mph on the speedo is about 55mph on the GPS. Found the gearbox and transfer box numbers. Gearbox is 3615 LLR and the transfer box is 22D197619D/220197619D. Was struggling to tell. Also under lots of dirt was a label that said 1.410. So guess it's a 1.4 transfer box. Would fitted a 1.2 disco box help? Along with a new speedo gear so all the numbers are right! Cheers Stephen
  8. I would say my speedo over reads, guessing its got the standard drive gear installed but with smaller tyres. Ive had the car for 2 and a bit years now. The previous owner done the engine swap. I guess it could be just noisier than what I think it should be. Hard to tell, it will do 70/75 or so the speedo says but thats flat out on the accelerator and wouldn't say its comfortable for the engine but it could be I guess. S
  9. Haven't checked the speed with a GPS, will do that tomorrow on my way to work, using the signs at the side of the road that flash your speed at you 30mphish on the speedo seems to be about 25/27, also haven't got any speeding tickets or anything. But will check tomorrow and see whats actually happening! Thanks
  10. I have thought about the tyres and I have 2 reasons to be against them, I just bought some new ones and changing all 5 (including the spare) would probably be £450 keeping it with AT2's and a random for the spare. Also just now my car just fits into the multi-storey at my shopping centre, by just I mean there is maybe 3/4cm in it! Will get the numbers posted up ASAP, will try and do it tomorrow morning before work. The thought of doing 75mph sounds exciting! S
  11. Will have a look this weekend, got the handbrake to sort so I will be around the transfer box. When I say a lot it just feels like a lot its maybe 20 miles a day. But its at least 5 days a week sometime more and it would be nice to have it cruising with the rest of the traffic and not holding up the HGV's! When you talk about it blunting performance I take it that refers to how fast I can get up to speed? Cant say I'm to worried about that, my days of racing things at red lights are behind me (for now anyway!) In terms of changing the box if its a 1.4, will any 1.2 box fit? Ive found a couple from 300Tdi discoveries but wasn't sure how much of a straight swap that would be. Cheers S
  12. Thanks for the speedy reply western, how do I know what box I have fitted? Can I tell this from the serial number? I know it may have been changed inside previously so it doesn't match and I sadly don't have that much detailed information to know if it has been. Cheers S
  13. Just now my 1986 90 has a 300TDi fitted with the standard LT77 and LT230 box. As far as im aware it's still got the standard gearing set. The tyres are AT2's 235/70/R16. I do a lot of motorway driving and anything over 55mph just sounds scary, like it going to take off! I was wondering about changing it to a discovery transfer box with the 1.2 ratio in the hope it would make the car a little quieter and maybe slightly more fuel efficient. I've been looking at transfer boxes and have come across plenty but does it have to be a particular kind from a certain discovery or will any lt230 box be a direct swap? I know the handbrake will all need modified to work if i go from a rod operated system to a wire operated system. Cheers Stephen
  14. Taking it off should make things so much easier! Never realised you could! (Just wish I had a bench to work on now!) Cheers S
  15. Recently my handbrake has been sticking badly, to the point I stopped using it until I got round to fixing it! So I thought I would order a replacement expander and adjuster and just make it all new and problem free! (Or so I thought!) I went to change the parts and got the old expander out destroying all the retaining clips in the process (waiting on new ones!) but I couldn't get to the top bolt of the adjuster. Managed the bottom one but just couldn't work out how to get to the top. Does anyone have any ideas? Its not that its stuck in, I just cant seem to get a socket or spanner on it! Cheers S
  16. Will have a proper look tonight hopefully. My thinking with it being the wheel bearing was I recently replaced it along with the swivel housing and all those bearings but I was in such a hurry to get it all back to egghead I'm not sure I set the torque right on the hub nut. Think it will be to tight causing premature wear of the bearing but will have a look tonight. Cheers
  17. So I've recently started to get vibration through the steering wheel and some loud squealing noises from what sounds like the front passenger side wheel. Not all the time, depends on speed and seems more prone when on an incline. I'm thinking wheel bearing? I've checked for play in the wheel and there isn't any (think that rules out the swivel?). Just wanted to check before I order parts. Cheers
  18. Just wondering. I recently changed the swivel housing and had to re-shim the top bearing, I couldn't get both the steering rods off the housing so done it with one in place. Meaning I couldn't get a proper feel for the resistance, if I've put to many shims in could this be the problem? There's more resistance, or less on the left wheel causing it to pull in?
  19. So I've fitted a new calliper and it's still pulling to the right. What should I try next? Was going to swap the front tyres to see if that helps but what else could it be? S
  20. I've ordered a new calliper so we will see! Going by the condition of the Pistons and just the overall appearance of them they were old callipers. Could have been the originals
  21. So Ive changed all the swivel bits and bearings and everything, changed the pads on both sides, also upgraded to the steel flexible brake pipes or whatever they are. Also had to change the calliper on the drivers side as the wiper seals were dropping out and I couldn't push the pistons in. Took the car out for a drive and wow its much better, skidded a lot when I push the brakes hard which it never done before! However its still pulling to the right, enough for an MOT fail. So I'm guessing its the calliper? Going to have someone step on the brakes while I watch the pistons but could it be anything else? S
  22. Well another day and no problems. Drove maybe 20/25 miles and nothing. Will assume whatever it was has gone for now! Thanks for all the help! S
  23. It has always been a diesel but not sedimenter. I followed the lines yesterday from the tank to the lift pimp checking for leaks or kinks and there's only a fuel filter. The fuel filter does have a sedimenter fitted though. I'm going to change the fuel filter this morning before I head to work. S
