New alternator problem

I don't think they do. The wiring diagram shows the NY wire going through a header and then to the warning light, if the light has failed or has a bad connection, the alternator will not get the current to excite it. If the dash was out recently and the light never comes on, that's were you need to start your search.

The panel with all the warning lights in looks to be connected fine. Would assumption here be that one of the wires going into the connector has broken when pulling the gauges around? What colour wire would it be?

Think you will find the charge red light goes via the ecu not direct to the dash panel led but the wire colour codes haven't changed. So the charge light wire is still brown with a yellow trace line.

So does that mean the cable is likely to not be damaged behind the gauges? Or do you just mean it goes via the ecu first? Where does the wire come from? Just trying to establish where to look :)

The brown/yellow wire goes into the engine loom through connectors & reappearsbehind the instrument pack to connect to the charge light,

May be worth doing a continuity teston the wire from warning panel connector yo the end that fits on alternator, if you get a test beep then the wire is sound & should work, no beepon the test then the wire is  somewhere.

According to the circuit diagrams in Rave it doesn't go through the ECU, but does change color from NY to YN (on some models).

I agree a continuity test will point the way. You can also try ground the wire coming from the dash, that should make the light come on if you turn on the ignition. If it doesn't, the problem is either the bulb or it's feed (fuse 7 on early Defender TD5).
