Siting of thermometers is critical to accuracy, but the more tarmac and buildings there are, the higher the daylight temperatures will be. It could be a true indicator, of trends, but it could also be subject to very localised effects of the development of the airport. Good points, there does seem to be some suggestion record breaking 30 C plus temps at Heathrow are not shared from neighbouring weather stations. You'd be amazed at how hot airport aprons get, especially on calm, clear days - all that tarmac or concrete absorbs the sun and really radiates it back out. I think many airports now site their weather stations to try to reflect conditions on the runway, rather than in some nice shady spot, as air density is absolutely critical to aircraft performance, and temperature is a large part of that. It's of concern how many airports have temperature reports for our calculations that bear little resemblance to the temperatures at the take-off runway. So airport reported temperatures shouldn't really be indicative of general local temperatures.
