S3 Steering Box and Column to a 2a

Hi guys

Well yesterday what started off as just replacing the top steering column bearing, getting it all painted and fitted, ended up being a full strip down of the steering box as after I had painted the box and column and began to lift it off the floor to fit after drying in the sun I could hear what sounded like ball bearings jingling about in the box and ended up stripping it all down to refit everything using grease to hold all the balls in place but I just couldn't get everything to stay in place as all the balls kept falling out, my son had a go at it for a couple of hours and he struggled with no result, so I have decided on buying a recon'd one but all I can find are S3 ones I know they will fit but as mines an S2a will the steering work without the use of the steering lock / ignition switch, what do you think.

JThe steering lock just pokes into a hole through the column body onto a machined groove on the column. It'll be absolutely fine without the steering lock, just make a cover for the hole put of a piece of tin wrapped around.

There are quite a few threads around with details of how to put one back together, though.
