Simon Williams
My apologies if this has been covered before - indeed I think I've read about this on this forum but I'm blowed if I can find it now. I understand there is a problem with using modern gear oils which contain sulphur base EP additives in gearboxes which have bronze components. As I understood it these are GL5 oils, but GL4 oils are OK. Is it that simple, or have I got the wrong end of the stick entirely?
steve b
EP90 ideally, (Allan oils ?) but I have been told GL4 is ok but haven't researched it technically. Steve
FridgeFreezer
Smith & Allan are the guys - and I think these days almost all gear oils are likely (but not guaranteed) to be fairly safe, however S&A will sell you the right thing, they also sell a fully synthetic "MTF90" that they developed for us lot that's higher performance but still safe on yellow metals. It's much runnier when cold too - easier to fill! I buy it for the 127 which has a Roamerdrive that can't take standard EP90 but does take a lot of abuse (4.6 V8 + 3-ton vehicle), but I am considering just buying that in bulk for the whole fleet in future. steve b
Smith & Allan....of course, thanks for putting the link in too. The MTF90 is interesting - there is noticeable drag in cold weather with EP90 until it's warmed up Steve
