92.9
Ahh I see! Wondered why I hadn't heard of them recently! Hmm, and they say the Essex V6 wasn't much good as a transplant in a Land Rover (for off-roading anyway). I wonder what they've done to the Cologne to make it useful. JimAttrill
I googled on 'Ford Essex' and found out that it is used in the low-range Mustang in the US. Ford still make a 4l V6 here in South Africa for pickup trucks though I don't know whether it is big 3.0l Essex or a Cologne 2.8l. It could also be a Mazda rice-burner engine as the companys are close here. The Essex V6 in 3.0l form was certainly made here years after it had been replaced in the UK. Lewis
I googled on 'Ford Essex' and found out that it is used in the low-range Mustang in the US. AFAIK the engine in the mustang is a cologne, at least the ones we dealt with were
JimAttrill
I think you are right, but why do they call it an 'ESSEX' engine if it isn't
Lewis
There were two types of ford V6 used in English market fords, the Essex (so called because it was developed in essex) in 3.0ltr and 3.1ltr, and the Cologne ( so called, rather predicatbly, because it was developed in cologne) in 2.8 ltr and 2.9ltr forms, this engine was later increased in capacity to 4.0ltr and is fitted to North American spec LR3, and to low end Mustangs. I'm not aware of the Essex being further developed Confusingly there have been two V6 engines refered to as ford essex v6, a UK engine mentioned above, and a US (canadian) engine that was used in previous generations of mustangs in the states until its recent replacement with the cologne 4ltr See link to both types of Essex (UK and US) V6 Quote from canadian Essex V6 wikipedia entry A 3.9 L (238 in³) 12-valve version with 3.8 in (96.5 mm) bore and 3.46 in (87.9 mm) stroke was introduced in 2004. It was installed in a running change on later production 2004 Mustangs before it was replaced by the 4.0 L Cologne OHC engine.Applications: * 2004 Ford Mustang * 2004-present Ford Freestar Ford spec sheets note this engine as 3802 cc (232 in³). The bore and stroke, however, work out to 3857 cc (236 in³). Another strange thing is that this engine, if specs are to be believed, is .010 in underbore compared to the 3.8 and 4.2. Hope this helps
92.9
All very interesting. Having read up all the details I have decided that the best type of Ford V6 is a Rover V8! Mike
