RPR
When I depress the yellow knob, it will not "catch" and select 4 hi. It floats up and down against its spring. I take it that this likely means that the two little springs - part no. 231116 that pull back the selector when the yellow knob is depressed, are shot? Is this a reasonable diagnosis ? If not, could you please advise the likely cause and walk me through the fix in some detail ? Cheers,
Jon White
You'll probably find that the ends of the two selector shafts that are covered by the ickle pressed steel cover plate have siezed. The cover plate is immediately above the front output flange. Remove it, and lubricate the shafts and work them in and out till it all frees off. I pack mine with grease and then seal the cover plate on with RTV to prevent this. Jon
Phil Hancock
231116 are the reverse gate springs so are not even on the transfer box.
RPR
Thanks Jon. That sounds about right. I'll have a go at it next weekend. RTV? Good catch Phil. I realized after I had posted that I had entirely the wrong set of springs - the fact that they have hooks on the end should have been a giveaway - but rightly assumed it would be corrected. Gareth Dickens
RTV? - a.k.a. silicone sealant. Different colours for different uses. Red - high heat. Black - car or gasket maker. White - general purpose/ home. etc.
Jon White
Yup - wot he said - aka silicone sealant. I've got some rather fetching grey stuff left over from refitting my kitchen if we're going to get tarty about what colour it is!!!!
