bing90
hi all. As my brakes are now knackered (pulling badly to front offside) on hard braking I was thinking of fitting a rear disc braked axle, but my worry is Which one???? and what spline diff ?? as i say my defender is a 1991 H reg 200tdi with rear drums!!! what axle will fit? and off what vehicles what spline diif do i need I want a straight chengeover if that is possible all your help would be appreciated steve
Guest diesel_jim
You need one from either: a newer defender 90 rangie classic disco 200/300Tdi (or V8), not disco2 if you get a very early rangie then some of them have one of the dampers mounted "the other way" around, but as these axles/vehicles are pretty old now anyway, you don't see many of them. it's just a case of unbolting your old one and rolling in the new one. diff ratios are the same, brake pipe union is usually the same as well. you don't need an ABS equipped one (not sure of the calipers are different anyway) so its pretty easy. usually see them on fleabay for £50~£

The reasosn are 1. Both shocks face the same way (Forwards) early RR stuff has one each way 2. Diff Ratios are 3.54 3. Later RR stuff can have alloys fitted 4. Not to late 90s wise otherwise you'll be into ABS axle 5. Not too late as late diffs have a different flange on the end, even this can be gotten aroun, but say a 89-92 axle should be cheap too, ABS and air suspension stuff can make more money Buy a COMPLETE axle diff shafts hubs flanges calipers etc etc etc and swap over - look at the thread in tech archive ! nige
s2hotdog
As Nige Says I've done it by myself - easy but heavy Only problem stuck fine thread bolts and also had to change the brake line Tee pice from the old axle Well worth it - say goodbye to alot of maintence if you drive offroad alot! Stonehead1
You lot shouldn't put temptation in my way! I have umpteen things I need to spend time and money on around the croft (and even on the Defender), but I'm now thinking, hmm, disc brake conversion? I know what the Other Half is going to say... pigster
but its for your safety and her piece of mind... after all disc breaks work so much better than drums...
