treebloke
I have a Defender with a R380 gearbox problems, it works is low range but no drive in high range. I have a good box in 1998 Discovery. I know the box will not do a straight swap but are they close enough related to swap any parts or can the box out of the Disco be made to fit a Defender?. Is it time to call Ashcrofts or are there any gearbox reconditioners in the midlands.
Paul Humphreys
Sounds like its the transfer box and not the main box. Transfer boxes are the same, with a different ratio. Paul
LandyManLuke
Agreed, sounds like the R380 is fine, and its the LT230 transfer box that is at fault.
Guest diesel_jim
is it fully engaging in high range? i had similar troubles years back, and it turned out to be so much mud and poo accumilated on the top of the gearbox that it was physically restricting the movement of the hi-lo linkage! treebloke
I have taken the box out and will have a look see whats what when we take the transfer box off.
Mo Murphy
If it works in low but not in high then it is certainly the transfer box not the main gearbox. Mo
