V8 Freak
Friends TDi has started making a funny noise.... It occurs rythmicaly with the engine revs, can be heard through the air intake. Sounds like a popping noise or as if you were knocking a stick against a wooden / bamboo tube in time with the engine. (Removal of the air filter makes it quite loud.) He believes engine performance may be down but not driven far since the noise started. Any suggestions ? Anything to check ? Thanks in advance Neil
white90
head gasket would be a suspect
Les Henson
Popping out of the inlet manifold could be a valve problem. Tell him to check his tappet gaps - otherwise head off by the looks of it. Les.
JimAttrill
Mine made a sort of chuffing noise in the air intake once. It was caused by broken valve stem caps which made the gap about .9mm instead of .2 as it should be. You should follow Les's advice I think.
