poacher
Hi Folks, recenlty changed my alternator on my 200tdi converted 90 - reason it was smoking like hell & batterywarning light was showing with ignition off. Got new alternator, fitted it on Saturday just gone. Went to pick wife up from work & heard this horrible scraping noise. Thiswas the alternator fan gouging its way through the casing. Now, got new alternator off (in the rain), you can actually pull the centre shaft out so I reckon that as I'm tightening up the pulley it's pulling the shaft out, then when started the alternator is pulling the shaft back in, hence the noise. Anyone come across this before? Thanks in advance for any info.
LandyManLuke
the shaft of the alternator shouldn't move in/out/up/down at all, there's a bearing in the front of the case that holds it.
poacher
Thats what I thought, even compared it to the old one. Brand new parts eh? Absolute carp!! Embarrasing as hell driving through town with the noise
simonb
There is usually a large washer and a spacer tube that fits over the shaft behind the fan. As you tighten the shaft nut the pulley presses on the fan, spacer, the centre tube of the bearing and the top of the rotor. This controls the end float and prevents the fan touching the case. Sounds like the spacer and or washer are missing. Pic shows 300Tdi set up but most other types similar.
poacher
I've got the spacer next to the housing, then the fan, another spacer then pulley the spring washer & nut, even tried it with twin spacer next to the housing with no luck. Pulling my hair out on this one
