tommi
Hi My father has a 1994 300tdi Discovery. If it hasnt been started for day or two, it smokes badly when you start it up. It continues to smoke for about 5-10mins, and after that there is no smoke at all. The engine runs sweetly, and their is no nasty sounds coming from the engine. The smoke is white. Does anyone know what is causing this, or is it normal? Thanks in advance, Tom.

RRX
Sounds like steam to me, is the water level ok? probably just collects also of water in the exhaust as it cools down and evaporates it when started if all seams ok with levels

RRX
The only other thing that comes out as white smoke is oil burning in the exhaust housing on the turbo, but usually when a turbo oil seal fails they just empty all the oil either into the inlet and run away or exhaust and then sieze if not noticed due to no oil. lynall
Diesel burning wrong is also white ( black is over fueling) would agree with the cold weather comment, ie dont worry to much if it still does it when weather better then look into it further.
