LT77 gear and transfer box overhaul

Recommended Posts

Hi,

just picked up an Lt77 gear box with transfer box removed from a C reg defender. I want to give it a complete overhaul and my friend's done a number of old series gear boxes.

Please feed me lots of info on how to overhaul an LT77 and transfer box (what ever the number is of the transfer box that's standard on a 2.5 diesel defender).

What is a good price for the standard service kit (seals, gaskets and syncro's). I've found they are here: http://www.legs.co.uk/pricing.html

Is this the best place to pick them up?

Does anyone know of an online manual for an LT77 and transfer box? What service parts should I get changed? What oil do I use and is there any better oil to choose? What do people use in their gear boxes?

Should I change the rubber gear box mounts? What about doing a clutch change while I'm in there.

lots of info and pics please.

C-reg is old - almost as old as Astro-Al, Nige, Bish, Mo, MOG, etc (but not me :) )

If it was me I'd exchange it for an Ashcrofts box and save yourself a whole load of hassle stripping the thing down and rebuilding it. It's nothing at all like a series gearbox. You can get all the info you need to be able to replace the gearbox on this site, and while you are in there I would say change the clutch assembly (3-items) with a Borg&Beck item (AP now). reinforced clutch fork, and probably slave cylinder too. Check also the rear main bearing oil seal and replace it if it looks like it's leaking, thinking about leaking, considering a leak within the next few months, might leak if you look at it in a funny way - any reason really - but use a genuine replacement.

Forgot to add - LT77 has MQF (dextron 3), and the transfer case is EP80/90

Les.
