no oil mixing and nothing in water to i am thinking it is pressurizing and blowing the water out what happened is we went on holiday and did about 500 miles 1st day no problem 2nd day about 200 and all of a sudden temp gauge shot into red stopped cooled topped up did another 100 miles no problem towing then did 200 miles next day not towing checked water topped up same next day then hitched up caravan to come home did about 150 miles no problem then gauge shot up and ended up being transported home by aa now we top it up every couple of days and am about to pull the head off

Welcome. This site approves of the use of punctuation so there is no need to be afraid of , . ? ! ; and : :)

It could be the head gasket now, if it has been boiled a couple of times, but for the original leak you might also want to check out the radiator where the end tanks are crimped onto the radiator matrix, it is not uncommon for them to leak there - signs of lots of pink coolant stains are the giveaway. Also check the header tank cap is actually holding pressure as this can cause the water to boil.

sorry about the punctuation!!! i am a one finger typer, right have removed the head today looks like number 3 and 4 are leaking into the waterjacket. head is going to be pressure tested tommorrow for cracks then the task of reasembling oh what fun. i think rad and header tank and cap is holding pressure but i think i will change the thermostat aswell

:P head has no cracks!! ;) plastic locating dowels were in a bad way, bores are like new ,got to regrind valves as they are a bit pitted . but other than that spoke to a specialist today about skimming and he said it is ok to skim but maximum of 10 thou only no more will be organizing new parts gaskets soon :)

ps are there any issues with the timing chains as there are new kits for about £100 just wondered if there is an issue with any off it????????

hi all,

right all finished

parts needed were as follows

headset including headgasket was about £60.00 head bolts £38.00two steel dowels £1.50

skim and pressure test was £86.00

i also replaced the thermostat £12.50 and timing chain tensioner as the nylon wear strip was broken £24.99

i would say the job was not to bad to do you can buy the timing pins for about £4.00 (found after i had done the job )

setting the injectors was easy they must go back in the same place they came from but overall the job was not as bad as i was led to believe by a local diesel specialist who then offered to do the job for me!!

many thanks to all off you and sorry for the punctuation i am better with my spanners than this thing!!!
