Scotian
are they solid or hollow? If I but a small bend in it then welded a brace on the bent side that in effect made a straight line for the force to follow would that be ok?
ciderman
Bending the arm will also effectively shorten it which will lift the diff nose. A quick fix for this is load a couple af washers onto the arm before fitting it into the bush .
will_warne
A quick fix for this is load a couple af washers onto the arm before fitting it into the bush . That's often needed anyway if you've got hung up badly and bent the bush mount. Scotian, if you're going to the trouble of bending standard arms and welding on a gusset why not get hold of some suitable spec tube with an ID the same as the OD of your current arms? Then you can make up a new set of arms by bending the new tube, cutting off the ends of your current arms and sliding them into the new tube and then welding into position? At least that way you know you won't have problems.

From a strength point of view, you are actually better off welding a fin on to the outside of the bend. Steel is stronger in tension than compression. As you try to increase the bend, an external fin will be tensioned where an internal one would be compressed. You can achieve similar strength with far less weight this way. Additionally, the external fin is better protected from ground impacts. Si
