FridgeFreezer
The regulator on the alternator has gone, you can often buy them separately for about £15, or you can fit a new alternator.

BogMonster
Because part of the regulator unit is a diode pack which stops the current leaking through the alternator when the engine is off and if this doesn't work properly, current can flow in the wrong direction which flattens the battery. Not an uncommon problem.

Through the diodes in the regulator pack, if they go faulty.
