stobbie
I have a toyota hj60 overhere, I need to charge the batteries. This car has a 24v system, can I just put a normal 12v charger on one of the two batteries or is this a bad idea?
FridgeFreezer
Ideally you'd put a 12v charger on each battery, just charging one is not great but may give enough boost to get it started so it can charge itself properly. Or it could cause a battery to explode.
TheRecklessEngineer
I'd probably disconnect both batteries, then connect them in parallel with the charger. Like Fridge said, you may get away with only charging one, but then you also run the risk of blowing up the one you haven't charged.... stobbie
but then you also run the risk of blowing up the one you haven't charged.... Can someone explain to me why this could happen? If I charge one battery untill it's full, will the other one stay just as empty? So when I try to start, one battery will charge the other one very (too) fast? What if I charge each battery for a few hours?
western
charging each battery in turn [both disconnected from each other] would be the best/safest way IMHO.

Paralleling them or just charging one could lead to strange or dangerous reactions. To get 24v from two 12v batteries they are in series and hence one cannot charge the other, the issue is one providing all the cranking current but having to pass it through the other flat one on the way to the starter. If you don't understand, let me google that for you.
