PaulN
1996 Discovery 300tdi Each day we start the truck we have to rumble down a 250 meter track to go anywhere. Every time for at least half of that distance loads of smoke billows out the back which eventually stops being visible - presumably as a degree of heat builds up in the engine? Any views on what this actually is (un-burnt fuel, worn valve guides?) or is this normal for this model and age? Or are we to expect some bigger problem to come in the near future? http://forums.lr4x4.com/style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif Okay mpg at 29 on run, 25-27 round and about and 23 towing. Engine's oil consumption is negligible. Starts, ticks over and runs no probs. 64,000 miles
JimAttrill
If it is white smoke that smells of diesel your bores are a bit worn. Get a compression test done, should be max 24 bar, if less than about 17 then your engine needs a rebore. If nobody is complaining about the smoke you can live with it as it will only happen when starting from cold. Eventually the engine will become very difficult to start because of the low compression. Thanks Jim, 'tis white but I'll have to get the Missus to check on the smell - Is a compression test expensive? If a re-bore is eventually gonna be needed your saying it's likely to be the pots damaged or gummy rings - does that mean i's nout to do with valves? Thanks lrfarmer, Has always been smokey but only in first am but worse this last month or so. New timing belt in at 45,000 now 64,000. Think I might knock all the rearward mirrors out a bit for a while and pray!
