Gas Cylinder Threads

I'm looking to increase my compressed air storage capacity to complement the smallish 24l tank on the compressor. It occured to me that I could use an old Propane or Butane cylinder (once emptied and filled with water to expel any gas). Does anyone know the thread used on these where the valve screws into the cylinder - is it something nice like 3/4" BSP, or am I going to have to weld on a sensible fitting?

Cant help with thread size(used the original tap)but a easy way to empty propane tanks is turn them upside down and let it vent .

I use a couple as mobile storage tanks,filled with the workshop supply(saves bringing vehicle etc to the workshop) but I wouldn't recommend trying to increase the tank size on a small pump because the pump is usually matched to tank size and you will find that your compressor never gets the chance to rest, if you are short of air,bite the bullet and buy bigger...

The thread into the cylinder itself is not a convenient one at all, it is something like 1/2"NPTS?, its a sharp V dryseal thread. When i turned a 12kg into a water tank to go in the riding truck behind my 4" scale traction engine i opened the thread out to 1/2"BSP as that was fractionally bigger and IIRC the same pitch thread.

Check the bore of the fitting, where the regulator screws on the outside. When I did what you are suggesting (increasing the receiver capacity) I found the bore was a nice size to tap straight away with a more conventionally sized BSP tap (IE, I had one!).

The whole idea (both hose fitting in the existing valve, and increasing receiver capacity) really worked well, and has been for several years. The compressor hasn't worn out, but it was a 75 or 100 litre tank to start with (I think), so not exactly comparable.
