rocky
Hi, just got my disco 1 back from mot station (passed after spending a few quid) but i am now looking to tart up the bodywork a bit and i'm looking for some advice on what paint to get to spray the bits with. I haven't done any spraying for a few years so no doubt things have changed a bit since the 1980's but I still have a compressor and sprayguns. I'm not doing a respray just the tatty bits round the edges. Any help greatly appreciated Regards, rocky.
pw8757
The major change is that thanks to the EU you're not meant to be able to use cellulose on a car any more, unless its a classic and you get a special license. That (theoretically) leaves you using water based acrylic which takes ages to dry or you have to get special infra red heaters or other forms of heat to dry the finish, or you use a two pack product which contains cryano acetate which can be very harmful to health and which requires an air-fed mask for complete safety, although there are those who (think they?) can get away with it using just a filter mask and saying the special words "Not going to die today" If you are only just going to do the bits around the edges, you may be able to get away with aerosols, but this can be very expensive. However, there are paint suppliers who can legitimately supply cellulose and are prepared to (legitimately) interpret the new regulations favourably. Short version, approach your local automotive paint supplier at first instance and seek his/her advice, see how the ground lies. Hope this helps. rocky
thanks for the reply, would cellulose paints react with the paint that is on the vehicle?

Celly is still available from paint suppliers, well it certainly is in Doncaster as i bought a couple of litres today Keith
HoggyN
The major change is that thanks to the EU you're not meant to be able to use cellulose on a car any more, unless its a classic and you get a special license. According to my local supplier, cellulose has only been restricted for commercial use. It is still ok for amateur use and you don't need a a special licence. Among other places, you can get it from here If your car has been already painted with synthetic paint you may have a problem overpaintiing with cellulose, otherwise you should be ok. Regarding spraying over, you may need to use a product called Bleed Seal which can be lightly sprayed and not flatted down to inhibit any adverse reaction you get when you apply the first coat of primer. The bleed seal will need its own thinners. Some people will blow the whole area with this to make sure, but it is quite expensive stuff. rocky
Has anybody tried halfords paint that they match to you colour code (i think they call it nitro/synthetic, or something similar?
pw8757
I have to confess that I haven't used Halfords for paint, because they tend to operate on quite high profit margins for stuff like that. Also, I would prefer to get my colour mix from someone who does it for a living, rather than occasionally selling a few litres of paint along with bikes, tents and those little Christmas Trees that make your car smell nice. Auto Paint specialist for me.......................!
