StreetDragster
Hi All Looking to replace the oil seal at the front of my transfer box, behind the flange which mates to the front prop shaft. It this a simple job? Any tips? I've done the rear diff pinion seal already, so i'm just wondering if its similar, do i have any spigots to pull out etc? Also, how do i check a universal joint for wear? Give it a waggle and look for play? Thanks Matt 1995 Discovery 1 300TDi 5 door Manual
cipx2
For the seal (ignore the bearing part, although it would be a good idea to change it as well) see: http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=3315 http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=23690 http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=25053 For UJs, look for play, for stiffness and for rust around the seals. Give it a good shake in all directions on the vehicle (like a monkey shakes a tree to knock some fruits off) and also disconnect it from the diff/transfer case and wiggle it from the flange end. To replace the UJs see http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=7982
disco_al
it may be worth getting a new output flange as well. they are only about £25, and as i discovered when i did mine on the v8, the flange had worn, which was why the seal had started leaking in the first place. IIRC they come with the seal as well.
