disco_al
As you are all aware, the disco to defender tdi engine swap is a common thing to do (which i did last year). Now, when we fitted it last year, we used one of the excellent kits from the bay of e, which helped the situation no end, and managed to cobble together the downpipe and the rest of the n/a system. It has now become time to replace the rest of the system, what do you guys recommend? Obviously we no longer have the flange joint from the front pipe to play with, so is it going to be just a case of buy the TD system and make it fit? Obviously we no longer have the flange joint from the front pipe to play with, so is it going to be just a case of buy the TD system and make it fit? Hi Al, When I did this earlier this year, I made my own downpipe using a TD5 downpipe which has a flange on both ends, IIRC. We copied Uncle Les's pipe that he made in his engine swap thread but modified it slightly to suit our system. Les had a flange on both ends of his downpipe but we made ours with slide over joint underneath the car. We cut one flange off the TD5 pipe and, after modifying the bends etc., welded in some of the downpipe from the Disco, which we had kept, in order to lengthen the pipe and get it behind the gearbox cross member we finished off with another piece of the smaller diameter TD5 pipe. We re-welded the flange back on to another piece of the Disco downpipe and made a split, slide over joint on the other end. (The disco downpipe was slightly larger I.D. and O.D. than the TD5 pipe so it lent itself to doing this). This intermediate pipe went onto the back of the homemade downpipe and then onto one of those straight through middle pipes that are readily available. It all sounds a bit complicated and I don't think I've done the best job of explaining myself but it was actually quite straight forward. Whilst doing all this I sought the advice of a local independent Land Rover Specialist and they recommended using the TD system, as you suggest. We decided to go our own way because we managed to get all the bits cheaply. If you want me to I can probably get some photo's tonight and post them on here. Let me know if that would be useful and I'll sort it. HTH. Mark.

markyboy
I'll sort it tonight mate.Regards. Hi Al, As promised here's a few photo's which will hopefully help with the explanation a bit. Here's a view from above, probably not much help. A picture of the joint from underneath. Looking back from the front, this is the remainder of the TD5 pipe. Another one of the joint from a bit further forward. We used a 200Tdi rear silencer with a bit of modification of the straight through pipe joint, the pins weren't wide enough apart. Finally a picture of the intermediate straight through pipe from the back looking forward. HTH. If you need any further info please let me know. Mark. western
wtf is that in the second to last picture? 90 rear box for a late 300tdi or td5 vehicle
markyboy
wtf is that in the second to last picture? It's rear box for a 90. It is actually off my own 200Tdi 90, it is my brother in-laws car that we have converted. I notice Ralph says it's for 300Tdi/TD5, I'll bow to his superior knowledge but it must be the same as the 200Tdi 90 uses as that is what I have and this is a new silencer taken from my car. Mark. Your correct, I thought it was a later version, which looks similar but has the pipe at both ends of the silencer.
