I have just had a similar problem and this is how i fixed it ,first i checked the brakes were properly adjusted ,then checked the wheel bearings then the vacuum pipe and valve and then the master cyliinder ,im saying this as i bought a master cylinder but it appears to have been the vacuum pipe was a bit worn at the end and the vacuum wasnt working properly all i had to do was cut it shorter and reconnect Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Les Henson Posted July 28, 2009 Share Posted July 28, 2009 Failed servo/vaccuum loss would make the pedal hard to push, but it wouldn't go down to the floor. If you had air in the system, then the pedal would be spongy, but you would be able to pump it up and maintain a hard pedal. No brake pipe as standard near the outrigger, so it might be worth looking under there to see if the pipes have been re-routed. One press to the floor would make a significant difference to the fluid level, so if it's happened a few times I would expect the level to be right down (it takes about 10-presses for one of the chambers to empty). I would go for master cylinder seals - a weak seal will let fluid past with no detectable leak, other than the pedal sinking to the floor. There are two types of rebuild kits - one is a bag of seals, and the other contains seal, piston assembly, etc (about £20). Go for the latter - for an extra £9 or so it's well-worth it. May not be your particular master cylinder, but the method is much the same. Pay careful attention to the position of the seals, the correct seal in the correct position, and which way round it's fitted. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=5300 Les.
