MickRover Posted September 16, 2009 Share Posted September 16, 2009 Hey all, i found you awesome sight when I googled "replacing panhard rod bushes" (wonderful google eh) My question is, my Disco (1992) at 90 to 100 kmph gets a shudder straight up the steering column, or when I hit ruts or small pot holes at lower speeds. I asked this question on a simple ask an expert site and he said it may be the panhard rod. Hence me googling and finding the thread "Replacing panhard rod bushes By Les Henson" He says on that thread "Wear in the panhard rod bushes is usually identified by wandering steering, a click or knock - especially when starting a turn" So I what I would like to know, after reading that discription could my shudder problem still be related to the panhard rod. Garthy Posted September 16, 2009 Share Posted September 16, 2009 Could well be the panhard rod bushes. Try move your panhard rod at each end and you shouldn't get any movement. I had a similar problem...If I hit a small bump in the road regardless of the speed, the sterring wheel would shake violently. I Swapped both panhard rod bushes and it's all better now. saltyoldseadog Posted September 16, 2009 Share Posted September 16, 2009 I'm not sure about these kph things but my '93 200 Tdi suffered vibration at 2200 rpm which was around 55 mph in fifth gear. The problem turned out to be the front prop shaft which was seized solid and could not slide as intended. A new shaft fixed it. If it's been going on for long, the bearings might suffer, too. MickRover Posted September 17, 2009 Author Share Posted September 17, 2009 I shook the living daylights out of the panhard rod and there was no movement at all, BUT, a mate of mine was just round and I was telling him about it and the fact that I had gotten the front wheels balanced. My back tyres and front tyres differ (twas like that when I bought it) so he suggested that the tyre place may be usless and didnt do it right and/or one of the front tyres may be bodgey so I swapped the front and back wheels around and it all but stopped it (I think) I will take it to another tyre place and get them to balance all 4 wheels b4 I get much older and hopefully it may make it even better. What my major issue is now, I have never driven any 4wd drive much before so I dont know how it should sit on the road in the first place, but there is a slight movement in the steering wheel on small ruts, is this normal ?? disco_al Posted September 17, 2009 Share Posted September 17, 2009 also check the steering damper and swivel preloads, as they can both give the symptoms described. try searching for "death wobble" (IIRC) - should bring up a multitude of results. Orgasmic Farmer Posted September 17, 2009 Share Posted September 17, 2009 Another vote for swivel preloads here. BUT also check for play in the steering box. Get someone to wiggle the steering while looking under the bonnet to see if the input and output of the box are moving together. If there is any wear in there you will see some free play which may explain the wander on the steering. You may be able to adjust it out but usually means a new box is not far away!
