Ashy
We have a 300tdi N reg and recently we have been having an intermittent problem with it. Whilst driving the vehicle loses power without warning. It lasts for only a few seconds and then comes back to life. It is most unnerving ! No dashboard light come on. No miss fire. The engine doesn't cut out completely. Any clues ?

Jiminy Cricket
Hi Ashy, Bit of a newbie myselfhowever had a similar prob with my 96 110 defender - 300tdi as well. After a service, fuel filter change etc it continued to getworse.....after a trip from Scotland to wilts pulling a trailer itgot critical. Although OK on the trip down from Scotland somedays later it became un drivable......turned out to be the fuel liftpump. With the 300 tdi it needs fuel and air and itshould work. If the air filter is clean and youstill have a prob I would look at fuel. Try the water separator(if fitted) near the fuel tank first, then the filter (as in are theyclean and bleed them). Once you have done this and noimprovements try unscrewing the small nut on the fuel filter top, then manually pumping the lift pump (leaver on the underside). If you feel NO resistance try turning the engine over but notstarting, this should make the pump start to work when you pump it. If you still feel no resistance, or after some considerable time nofuel comes out the hole where the nut was in the filter thenyour lift pump is b@%$ed......not expensive and not to hard tochange......fiddle of course! If this is wrong / bad advise -please jump in. Hope this helps you Ashy, Regards Nick:)
sheltie50
Have a look at the air filter and work on through the turbo pipes, one could be de-laminating and collapsing under load
