kingrat Posted January 19, 2010 Share Posted January 19, 2010 Ok, so as some of you know I got my new toy last week. Followed the instructions re earthing expecting this to me an immediate issue. I still get the unable to communicate with ECU error message. However, where the ECU is is full of waste oil from the loom (which is cleaned weekly). What I am wondering is the oil contamination possibly still inducing an earthing problem after cleaning, or is my ECU possibly B***ered. OR Will stripping the ECU and cleaning the internals have any hope of sorting things out. Does anyone nearby have a TD5 I can test the Nanocom with in the unlikely event that I have a faulty unit? Porny Posted January 20, 2010 Share Posted January 20, 2010 Just out of matter of interested - you have got the ignition turned on? Or even engine running? Next, get a volt meter and check that you have 12Volts at the diagnostic socket. If this doesn't work - it will be a case of starting to pin some wires out. kingrat Posted January 20, 2010 Author Share Posted January 20, 2010 Porny, tried engine on and off. Same result in both cases. Nanocom LED flashes and says connecting, then the error. I'm back in Sheffield at the weekend so can start to break the wires out to see what I have where. K88MUD, Thanks. I may end up needing that offer if I cannot figure this out. I must admit I do feel its going to be a lack of voltage at some point as the diag socket was hidden under rather a lot of gearbox oil and may need more TLC than its been given to date. I would guess that your power supply at the cars terminal is OK - or you would not get any readout on the Nanocom - it would not light up at all. Question for Porny , please. My Nanocom , bought about 6 months ago , works fine rxcept does not like accessing the SLABS ECU . Has addessed it a few times , but other times just refuses. I don't use my Nanocom that often - as find it never works as it should. SLABS can be a pain at times, even using my Rovacom kit. Some Discoverys don't like doing it with the engine running, some prefer it with just the ignition on, some won't access unless the ignition is off. In all honesty it is more than likely just a slight wiring issue, but I've never had a Discovery long enough to have time to pin the wiring out and check. I honestly suspect that I still have an earthing issue but until I get off my ar** and look with a meter I'm just blowing in the wind. DaveA Posted January 21, 2010 Share Posted January 21, 2010 Yes Nanocom can be a bit temperamental with SLABS, but provided you have the latest firmware upgrade, and have ignition on, and engine not running, it should be ok. If it refuses, don't just try again. Unplug diagnostic lead form nanocom to power it down, then start again from scratch. Once it has been refused, it seems to lock in a loop and not reconnect unless restarted. Once connected, it is fine. There is a mod that can be done with wiring to allow connection & diagnostics with the engine running, but I've not tried it. engine - ignition on, engine running or stopped. SLABS - ignition on, engine not running BCU - ingition or engine on or off, but immobiliser must not be active.(to prevent reprogramming alarm / EKA codes when immobilised) Hope this helps. kingrat Posted January 25, 2010 Author Share Posted January 25, 2010 Well I checked the voltages at the ODB port and got the following (both with and without the ignition on): Pin Voltage 4 0 5 0 7 0 8 12 16 12 Also tested the Nanocom ODB port which corresponded to the readings Nanocom suggest.
