Typsey
Just got back from journey to the local DIY specialist and for the last 2 miles of my journey, the front offside wheel was making a high pitched squeeling noise. When I stopped at home, I checked the disc and it was very hot to touch. I had the brake pads replaced back in January and since then the discs have had a very clean appearance as if they are under braking strain all the time. This noise has not been present before. Any ideas?
BogMonster
first thing to do is check for a rock stuck in the caliper, though normally it just makes a horrible noise rather than making everything hot is it just the disc getting hot or is the hub hot as well? it could be the brake binding but sounds more like a wheel bearing to me
Typsey
Do wheel bearings normally squeel? I have just replaced a wheel bearing in the front nearside wheel and these made a different noise. Admittedly, it is the only reference I have with wheel bearings and they can make other noises.
dottythe90
first thing to do is check for a rock stuck in the caliper, though normally it just makes a horrible noise rather than making everything hot I'd go with that - happened to us on holiday last year. The noise started just after driving over a freshly laid section of loose chippings - thought the bl***y wheel was coming off, it was so loud and terminal sounding. Checked for anything obvious, and after we'd parked up for an hour or so (as it was just near where were going anyway) we just drove off like it never happened. Disco_Dunk
Ditto on the wheel bearings - I had one collapse after a bit of strenuous off-roading...... made a hell of a racket, and when I dismantled the hub, the bearing 'shrapnel' just fell out (the bearing cage had collapsed and deposited the rollers everywhere). One point worth noting is the re-tightening process once you've fitted the new bearings - don't be tempted to overtighten the hub-nut as that'll just destroy the new bearing after a couple of weeks (go on, ask me how I know.......) imspanners
If the wheel bearing has play in it, it can cause the pads to contact the discs at an odd angle. Or even the disc to rub against the brake caliper making a nice squealy type noise.
Typsey
Just had the wheel off and looked around. Lots of mud and play in the wheel when rocked at 12 and 6 position. Off to order wheel bearings!
BogMonster
usually if there is a rock stuck in the caliper, reversing off and then jamming the brakes on hard will shift it! quite a common problem here with a lot of gravel roads sounds like you have found the problem though... don't forget hub seal & drive member gasket, change those while you are at it
Typsey
Thanks Bogmonster and the rest of you guys. Will bear that little trick in mind for next time.
Exmoor Beast
Wheel bearings don't have long to live at all from when they start squealing in my experience! Will
