The gear mechanism is worn out. The easy cure is to change it. The difficult cure is to take it out, cut off a strip containing the few teeth that haven't been used, grind off the same number of worn teeth, then weld the strip of unused teeth into their place.

Most people pay the money and change the complete unit. Some people change the motor as well, but I suspect most don't bother.
