It's quite common for the tube to come loose and drop down in to the sump by 10-20mm or so. It's clamped in place by an olive and nut. If the nut loosens just a bit the tube will slip through the olive, lowering the dipstick in to the oil.

Undo the nut and carefully remove the tube - pull the nut, before the tube. you don't want the olive being pulled off and dropped in the sump. You should see where the olive shoud sit - and where it is currently.
