inspire90
Hello Guys, I have noticed resently that the level of water in the header tank kept going down, but there is no leak anywhere. Anytime I top up the water in the header tank by the end of the day it would have gone down a bit, when I check it after two days the header tank would be empty I will have to top it up again. What really baffle me is that I could not find leakage anywhere. Can someone please help me with what might be the problem or point me in the right direction of what to check and solution to this problem. Thank you. Mark
Which engine do you have? Assuming it is a 1.8 petrol, there are 3 primary causes for this failure... 1) Split heater hose 2) Inlet manifold gasket failure 3) Head Gasket failure Given the rate at which you are losing water, then I would plump for 1) or 3) as probable candidates.... I am sure there are other potential causes, but that is where I would be looking. Cheers Mark
disco_al
also on the 1.8 the thermostat pipes can leak, and as they are hidden under the inlet manifold can't always be seen. the metal coolant pipes can corrode too, introducing a leak. get the cooling system pressure tested asap, before it boils and eats the head
FridgeFreezer
What they said - get it checked and do NOT boil it / run it dry as you will make the head go soft, upping the repair cost considerably.

Kostas Zoulias
Hi, Freelander 1 2001, 1.8 petrol. In Greece. Still losing water. No leaks. December changed the water pump, water container, February changed the engine cooler, hollow, June Water at the feet (driver side Europe) Changed the heater matrix. July Hollow hose, changed all of them Sept Still losing a lot of water no leak ventilator working hard. Changed head gasket. Two days after the water container is empty no leaks, no ventilator working.
FridgeFreezer
Have you done the O-rings on the intake manifold? Those leak into the intake so you may not see any water as it gets sucked into the engine & burned.
