stuck
Hi all, Brake fluid, very expensive stuff that is only performing a very basic hydraulic function. Can hydraulic oil be substituted? I only ask because I have access to 100's of gallons of hydraulic oil and don't like paying £8 for a little bottle of brake fluid!
western
NO, if not the correct specification it'll most likely eat the seals or turn them to a black mush, not good for safe braking, it'll cost you more for new seals all round.
Mo Murphy
eat the seals or turn them to a black mush Brake fluid already does that quite well Mo
UdderlyOffroad
Thing is, it's not performing a 'basic' hydraulic function. The circuit itself may be simple to understand but it's a high performance setup and will cause ordinary fluids to 'boil'. If manufacturers could use something cheaper they would. Added to this as others have stated conventional fluid may eat the seals. It's designed as a system, and chopping/changing fluids & seals will cause no end of grief. (Albeit a system spec'd by accountants and assembled by brummies! :-) )
