Door Frames - welded and Brazed Joints

Recommended Posts

I have read a couple of threads about the joins within the defender door frame being brazed rather than welded.... Essentially this means that if you go to the effort of galvanising them, they then fall apart as the brazed joint melts...

I am starting to consider a plan to refurb my doors, and the idea of galvanising the frames before reskinning them is very appealing, so could anyone tell me which joints are brazed - on both front and 2nd row defender doors?

Cheers

Mark

no ideas 'm afraid.... don't see why LR would make the process of assembling the doors more costly, I'd have thought they'd all be welded except for perhaps the rear door which they might have braised because of the shocks loading of the rear wheel on there....

I have never seen any braze on a Defender door, just weld, and lots and lots of tin worm

I suppose someone may have effected a repair in the past by brazing. It used to be a popular method of repair before MIG welding became so accessible.

There are brazed joints around the waist rail on the front doors and around the handle box and the hinge tubes on the rear end door but I can't see molten zinc being hot enough to melt the braze TBH. Perhaps some research on their relative melting points might provide a definative answer.
