200tdi misfire issue

Recommended Posts

Hows it. Im currently having a bit of a drama with the 200tdi i have in a 6x4 Defender and am looking for some advise/suggestions as to the problem.

On start up it will only fire on three cylinders but sorts itself out after say 10 15 seconds . It will then run fine then suddenly drop the same cylinder for say 10 seconds then sort itself out again. Have checked the injectors , fuel pipes etc or obvious head problems. There is something i have never seen before. Smoke/steam coming from the lift pump area. There is no bad knocking noises.

If you have any thoughts on the problem , i would be very gratefull

I would imagine you have a fault in the injector or its feed pipe, possibly a crack or fracture but hopefully just a bad seal at a union, that is causing the diesel to leak out onto the block (hence the steam as the engine warms up) which is allowing the diesel level to drain back down when the engine is off, needing purging on start up. I'd replace the pipe first, and if you have no joy, replace the injector. I'd expect it's the no.3 or 4 that is causing the trouble, given the location of the steam.

possible a faulty injector, you say you have checked the injectors how ? have they been removed from the engine & been test bench checked for correct spray pattern & operating pressures ?

if not, then reckon a bench test at a diesel injection specialist will prove useful.

Cheers for the thoughts. I havent bench tested the injector but i have put it into another 200tdi and works fine. The injector i put in its place was working fine in the other engine but still have the same issue when in mine. I figure the injector is ok. I also swapped over the pipes and still had the same issue. Still at a loss . Thinking might be more of an internal problem now. It does have a hard life as i use it lugging a woodchipper most days with a couple tonnes of wood chip in the back.

might be a problem with the FIP as it gives the same result with another known good injector.

are the valve gaps correctly set ? .20mm cold engine

have a work through of this diesel fault diagnosis chart as well.

Do a compression-test.

If your problem-cylinder is down on compression, this could explain its reluctance-to-fire.

Also, check the valve-clearances: a 'tight' valve will lose you compression, and without full compression the diesel's not going to light-off properly.
