western
have a look at this list http://turner-engine...pedengines.html under 90/110/Defender the red block is the older 2.5 TD unit & the 200tdi natural colour engine is in the bottom of the box immediatly above. some 200tdi have a different crankcase breather system with a extra seperator at the right front with a hose to the rocker cover 7 a green oil fill cap, later version did away with the extra seperator & has a yellow oil fill cap pictures of my defender spec 200tdi here

western
the 'gold' is just a anti corosion coating, it will come off if picked at or brutally pressure washed, your mates engine may have had the coating cleaned off by a previous owner, easy to find out which variants you both have by looking at the engine serial number on the flat face below number 1 injector it should start with 11L Defender 200tdi or 12L for a Discovery version. Lars L
I have two Discovery 200 Tdi engines... The older one with a low engine number has a rubber hose running from the valve cover to the cover behind the injection pump. The newer engine doesn't have this, so it has been omitted sometime during the production run. There are also other differences to be spotted when the engine is disassembled. The ally ladder between block and sump is modified on the newer engine and makes it a lot easier to install the oil pump. Which needed a socket on a wobbly extension on the older engine...
