dorky
Battery will not turn engine over 10.7 v on meter when not running, Jump started then shows 12.5v at battery on meter. What do you reckon regulator or alternator, motor is v8 with a127-45 Magneti alternator. Thanks
Puffernutter
Alternator should be charging at 13.8 - 14.4 volts. Battery should be at 12v off load. Low battery and not charging is my diagnosis - in the dark can you see any glimmer in the charging light on the dash? Cheers Peter
ejparrott
10.7v is very low....whats the voltage when cranking? I should imagine it will be extremely well down. Good chance the cold has just killed your battery, have you any specialists around who will test it for you, or do you know anyone with a battery tester? simonb
Anything less than 12.6v on battery no load, engine off, and the battery has had it.
JCC
With an accurate digital voltmeter you can test the battery charge. Switch off 12.6 volts is ideal for fully charged but readings of 12.4 - 12.2 are still enough to crank the starter though the battery is low. As above, with engine running 14+ is normal with lights and other loads off. Alternators are difficult to DIY test as brushes can be worn and diode solder connections cracked resulting in near normal voltage output but inability to recharge the battery. P.S. don't leave a discharged battery out in very cold weather - it will crack from freezing!
dorky
Thanks for all your help on this, put a replacement battery on today, fired up ok and charging at a steady 13.7 does not move at all when throttle is applied so regulator and alternator must be ok. Bring on the snow!!
