Steve Warman
Hi, my next problem is to replace the exhaust downpipe. I've read the tech archive on how to replace the pipe and it all seems feasible. The bolts near the box and the bracket holding it steady are al coming undone but I'm buggered if I can get to two of the bolts holding it onto the manifold or budge the one I can see. Is there any tricks or tips to getting these undone? I've soaked them in plusgas but that had no effect so far.
Frax
If its the 300tdi as far as I remember I used a swivel head on a 1/2 drive socket + two long extensions. Crawled under and did it from there.
Boris113
As above, I did it from underneath with a couple of long extension bars and a short wobble bar before the socket.
Steve Warman
Ok, thanks I'll give it a soak and try again from below.
NickMc
Try and get some Plus Gas penetrating oil not WD40. You could take it for a drive so they're warm then spray cold water on them to shock them, a good 6 point socket helps as well.
Steve Warman
Thanks for the replies but to be honest I ent some time looking at it all yesterday and wimped out. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get it changed out in time for an mot retest so took it to the garage to get sorted and retested at the same time. They did me a huge favour and used the bits that I'd bought, did it today and charged me for half the time they actually spent on it. In the end they had to take out the cross member, mill the triangular bracket as the studs were wider for the old exhaust than the new Given all this I would have had very little chance doing this myself, on a damp drive, with a box of spanners. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to do most jobs but this would've beaten me

Thanks Nick, I had my plus gas out yesterday when I started looking at it.
mmgemini
No you don't need to remove anuthing other than the down pipe on a 300Tdi. Jack the RIGHT front dumb iron up leaving the wheels on the ground. It's the only workshop job where a Hi-Lift helps.
