Last try to get my td5 running before i burn it!

Recommended Posts

Hi.

Im close to giving up and sending it down to the docks for a sea burial, but I thought I would give it one last try.

We have installed a replacement td5 10p (10P98293A in a 1999 110 defender) according to all rules and regulations, but with the old trimmed ECU. It is guarantied to work according to CWS where I bought the old disco engine. But we cant get it to start. The old one was overheated. Everything we can think of on the outside has been tested and replaced. The car starts if we tow it but Its smoking a lot and has no power. White strong smelling smoke when cranking.

We have recently checked:

Fuel regulator

Crankshaft position sensor

New diesel pump

Checked that fuel is coming to p.regulator and continues to the cooler.

The fuel pressure is fine.

The cylinder compressions are perfect

The timing is correct

The ECU is fine, we tried to replace it with both a def, and a Disco box from 1999

We have tried by only running the required cables to ECU

Replaced Injectors and set the numbers right

NO ECU error codes

replaced Injector harness

Checked oil in ECU, nothing to bad.

No alarm.

Quite new and strong battery

Imobilicercode learned

New Fuel filter... but this is the only thing I don't trust. Britpart stuff. Thou I don't see how this could cause anything..

Replaced all diesel.

No sediments or junk in the tank

Air purged from fuel system.

The only thing we haven't done is split the engine in half and have a look at the cylinders themselves. But we cant think of anything down there that could cause this. It should at least be some bad noise or clatter if there was an mechanical error? Can you think of anything inside the engine that could cause this? It feels like fuel starvation but its flowing fine through the head when cranking.

I am seriously enoyed now and don't know what else to try. Maybe I should buy a third engine, but then I might as well send the whole car to england for a complete rebuild and renovation.

No error codes is unusual - mine flashes up lots when its running normally!

Have you had the cylinder compression checked? It's obviously trying to start and if you have ruled out under & over fueling, compression is the next factor to look at.

While you are testing, it might be worth getting one of those boroscope cameras and having a look in the bores. I bought a USB camera from eBay for next to nothing - and it works pretty well. I'll buy one with an LCD screen later in the year as they are only £80 or so. That should tell you at least if the bores are full of oil, wet with diesel (as you would expect) or dry as well as excessive scoring & piston damage.

Have you tried your ECU in another vehicle? You say you've tried another one in yours, but that doesn't prove your ECU is OK.

Final option it to take it to a Td5 Grown-up (specialist).

Most problems come down to something simple that has been missed when the owner has 'tried everything'. Going through ruling things out metodically and according to a check list very often finds the problem.

Best of luck,

Si

Fuel filter + check to make sure the high and lower pressure lines haven't been swapped at the filter housing (although I think you've done that already as you say fuel pressure is fine?).

Also throw in a bottle of injector cleaner, TD5s seem to really like the stuff.

Jup, fine in 1-4 cylinder.

air flow meter?

The air flow was fine last time we run a diagnostic.

The filter looked good and was full with diesel. The fuel lines has not been moved since we swapped the engine so it could not be wrong. and the Diesel is going in the right direction, and the pressure on the return pipe was fine.

Ill give it a bit more testing, I thought that I should check all the wiring to the ECU and se that it good a good solid power and ground.

The engine was installed by the guy who is considered to be on of this countries no1 guy. He also had the former head technician of Land rover stockholm there for 1-2 days to try to start it. But they could not... So my skills are quite limited compare to them. But I am trying.

Have you tried your ECU in another vehicle?

Nope, havent tried that, but the other ECU is 100% functional with a defender from the same year. Il give it a go.

Thanks for all the tips so far.
