Josh NZ
Hey all, I'm currently tossing up a generator to alternator conversion on my series 2a (see http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=78505&st=0) and I'm just wondering which one will be best for my needs. I want to run a stereo, a pair of speakers (150w) and a couple of spotlights (55w). I know that series 3s had the Lucas 16ACR with the external regulator, but I don't really want an external one. I also heard that I need to hunt down the bracketry from said series 3 as it will make the whole thing a bolt on job, is this right? also what other steps need to be taken if I've missed them? My knowledge of electrics is relatively small compared to some of the grown ups on here, so electrics-for-dummies language would be fantastic! Thanks in advance Josh
Phil Hancock
Lucas A127-55 will be a bolt on fit on a series alt bracket, if you uprate the cables from the alt to the battery you could fit an A127-70 which is from a Disco 1 200TDI but the front casing of the alt will need turning 120*. Thats easy just remove the 3 bolts holding the casings together and tap the front casing round and refit the 3 bolts.
Tanuki
The 15/16/17ACR type are considered obsolete. Better to go for a Lucas A127/A133 or - my preference - a Bosch K1-55, which fits the same mountings and gives you 55 amps. These were specified for 1980s/1990s Ford Escorts/Transits/Sierras so should be easily available from your local motor-factors. If you really want to go heavy-duty a Bosch K1-70 will give you 70 amps, but that's going to be pushing it if you want to stick with a single-belt drive - you'll need bearing-life-shortening levels of belt tension and it'll 'twitter' when charging hard after a cold start. Whatever, you need to make sure the wiring is up to it - you need a paralleled-pair of thick brown cables from the two big terminals on the alternator direct to the battery + terminal to handle the output. The small terminal on the output-plug is the warning-light.
Josh NZ
I'm leaning towards the A127-55amp at this stage as they seems to be a bit easier to find. Im assuming that's a yes to pinching some alt brackets off a series 3 as well? And this is a really dumb question, but it's a left hand fit right? And which way is the adjuster lug going to go? Sorry and thanks again haha
lexi
but it's a left hand fit right? And which way is the adjuster lug going to go? Left hand fit and adjuster on top.
Gremlin
My vote is for bosch as well, i have a large 100 amp one, from an unknown doner, wiring connections are lug type. Best upgrade i did, it should be run with twin belts but its been fine with one and fitted to the tdi after the 2.3. Its a tight squeeze but it fits. Josh NZ
Mmm ok, I still haven't done anything about this so suggestions are very helpful! And thank you Lexi for solving the fitment riddle! Unfortunately Bosch units are rather difficult to find out my way, there's a heap of Lucas 15/16/17ACR types on trademe but I'm trying to lean away from them. I want to use eBay but don't have membership or PayPal etc so I need to get onto that haha
