simonb
on the mondeo one this isn't actually possible, twisting the back casing to make it the opposite hand doesn't work cos the casings dont match nack together, i know cos i've tried That trick works with Lucas or Marelli Magnetti copies, wont work if the front casting only has 2 fixing holes and not 3. A Land Rover 100a v8 alternator wont fit a 300TDi as the spacing between the front and back brackets is too small. If its 100a make sure its a TDi one. s2hotdog
I've used deisel escort alternators on my 200tdi - straight fit don't know the amperage though I think fiester ones are the same go for a xr2 with eletrical everything for high amps £ 15 from my local scappies - but I don't go there very often Cheers Steve
02GF74
100amp Marelli alt from a 300Tdi air condition fitted Discovery is on my 200Tdi, IIRC the alloy body had to be realigned to allow it to fit & the old pulley was fitted to replace the multi groove version. the early land rover alternators (LR models from memory) have differen diameter spindle to the later (A models) so the pulley nor the nut asre going to fit. I have info. of a man that can make an alloy pulley any diameter so if you want the alternator to kick out more amps at lower rpm (larger diameter) then let me know. he can also do smaller diameter v8 water pump pulleys too. Bear in mind that max alternaotr speed is about 12,000 rpm so don't go too crazy!
Bull Bar Cowboy
Don't know if you're aware, but alternators aren't actually "handed" as such - remove the long through-bolts that hold the casing together and the end section of the alternator (with the mounting / tensioner lugs) can be rotated to suit the application. Matt Like Tonk and others have found ………………. Some of the ford (and possibly others) are held together by 4 unevenly spaced bolts and twisting the front by 120 degrees doesnt work. The old 3 bolt ACR’s were fine in the respect……………..perhaps Lucas did get something right after all. As O2 has pointed out …………… there is a difference between the older LRA models and the later LRB models. IIRC …….. LRA have a woodruff key for the pulley ………… LRB have a different sized spindle / nut and the pulley is not positively located. Most LRB models are serpentine (multi V ) pulleys. Bull Bar Cowboy
In that case Ian, I stand corrected! Learn something new every day.... Matt No …. not at all Matt ………. turning the front (or rear) is still very valid .............Its just that some will and some wont …… From Where I’m standing it seems that early stuff will turn…….. and late stuff will turn ……… but there was this fascination by manufacturers of using 4 fixing bolts that is somewhere in the middle ……….. if that makes sense. pigster
my head hurts... good info though... and to summaries.. - I could get one built for me... (bit expensive for me) , try one off a xr2 or just go a scrappy with my dead one and say I want one like this... (that sounds easy to me) Cheers boys..
