bill van snorkle
I've never play'd with any stuff other than Jap axles and the one set of rover axles on my toy but from the pirate threads people seem concerned with welding to the head casting, looking at the chip pattern it almost looks like cast iron this doesn't make sense as the axle tubes are welded on just curious The steel axle tubes on Dana and Salisbury diffs are not actually welded to the cast SG iron centre section. They are effectively riveted with a molten puddle of steel through the several staggered plug weld holes in the casting. Maybe drilling through the bottom plate and casting and fitting several steel pegs could help the welds out a bit, but most seem to get away with just pre heating and welding. Will machine up a load of suspension bosses this week as well as finish the other hub and weld the shave plate on. G
De Ranged
Nice welds, you spun it up in the lathe yet to check the warpage, or are you working on the theory of low speed toy with acceptable run out ?

It's too late now. But if it's a mile off i could just face it off. I doubt it'll be much. It was an interference fit when it went on. I'm not the welder, a close friend is. Tig's for a living. dirtydiesel
Looking good G, any more pics? Are you planning On running Rover discs? What are you going to do with the lack of register for the centerbore of the disc
zim
Dan, going to try it without the centre bore. Yes LR discs and calipers. Finished machining the second hub today, interference fit also. Welded up a lot of the truss today as well, before welding it to the axle to avoid bending the tubes. Spent the rest of the day machining 1 1/4 NF bosses for Johnny joints. Tomorrow will weld up hub and weld on shave plate, new filler rods came on Friday G
Soren Frimodt
You shouldn't have too many problems with not having the centerbore, a disc that goes up and down a bit is rarely noticed on the pedal, it's more the sideways movement you notice. I found this out some years ago when Chinese Motorcycles were the hip thing. I was servicing one, and had just been a trip around the block on it, without noticing anything strange in the brake department. When I got it on the lift and raised the front wheel free from the ground to check for play in the fork for and bearings, I spun the wheel. And to my amazement the disc jumped up and down easily a couple of mil's!

Soren Frimodt
looking very smart indeed Sir, but you could've cleaned those wheels a bit before putting them on those nice axles
