ejparrott
More out of interest than anything else, but what pressure are heads normally tested at when they go for rebuild? I'm a boiler tester for the Rugby Model Engineering Society, so I know a bit about pressure testing, and I got thinking about it the other day. For the most part leaks don't show until around the 50PSI mark - many boilers have 'failed' above this, but it occurs to me that the water jacket in say a 200TDi is only 15psi? and yet the cylinder areas so around the valve seats, is subject to compression and explosion and at what pressure??!! There's also the core plugs which fail at over pressure do they not?
Nigelw
Not sure but I know a diesel combustion pressure can be above 1700psi but doubt tests would be that high.
ejparrott
That would blow the core plugs I'm sure!
Tanuki
2 or 2.5 Bar seems to be a typical test pressure; you need to clamp the head to a flat plate [to simulate the effect of bolting to the cylinder-block] and also apply heat. An example of the [Mercedes] test process is here: http://w124-zone.com/downloads/MB%20CD/W124/w124CD1/Program/Engine/602_603/01-420.pdf
Challo
300tdi and 200tdi heads were tested between 1.9 and 2.1 bar as a roughly machined casting. That's only head gasket face and datum points machined. Hope this helps
