weasel_110
Have enjoyed this one....trial and error, lots of head scratching and drawings on the backs of letters.Finished assembling (will take it apart again to glue) and test fitted today. Then drawers need sanding and varnishing...Lessons learned? Move to a country where it doesn't rain every time I'm off work... Be a bit more relaxed as far as measuring is concerned ( a Vernier???)Don't Ever use MDF again! (cant screw into edge without it splitting) Total cost of ply to do this, cut to size, is £76.16..... Here is the pic

ballcock
Looks good, If you're ever fixing into the end of mdf. or even ply always worth drilling a pilot hole first.

Ratty43
That's very smart indeed! Planning the same sort of thing for the back of my 90. I take it they will slide on the floor? I've found a pile of ball bearing runners at work...... My concern with running on the floor would be how hard it would be to shift a drawer full of kit. weasel_110
Hi Ratty! What are you thinking of carrying in there?I'm planning to just use them for food and a light basic selection of tools!I'm sealing them in and out with a couple of coats of varnish then if they do stiffen up, will spray some silitec on the drawer bases....If that doesnt work, maybe a thin sheet of PTFE?They are a vey snug fit!Thought of runners but the cost skyrocketed to get some that came out this far.... Just trying to keep it cheap and simple (for Camping)...
ballcock
I have similar drawers I built into the back of my van, no runners they just slide on the ply base and can slide right out to remove if needed. the weight in them seems to make little difference. weasel_110
Hi Ballcock! That's reassuring! The reason I'm doing this is because when I was in Argyle & Bute (lovely!)I was climbing over two plastic chests every time I needed to let the dog out! Oh and, the whole drawer frame slides out too (Mission dependant you see!) Without it, I can seat 5 Ninja's in the back!...
weasel_110
Just a build update....Longest thing was varnishing the pieces/assembly's... Drawer base and sides With top on Showing space for camping table Camping table pulled out for laybye coffee! Hinged step to climb in Drawer parts Drawer assembly Happy with result! After sealing the MDF with varnish/polyu - maybe spray with PFTE Silicon Plumbers spray. Its as slippery as a successful politician!! weasel_110
Is that how they're staying in power?I thought it was just the British public being stoopid!Would you Adam n Eve it?Silitek spray (we use it in work)
ballcock
If you are fixing handles to the front to pull the drawers open you may find the screws will give out after a while, I used straps through the sides and fixed internally on mine. weasel_110
Hi Ballcock, today I decided not to fit handles to the drawer fronts....It came to me that if I fit a stop at the back of the drawers to stop them going under the top, I wouldn't need handles! See pic, the drawers are as far back as they can go now....
ballcock
Looking good! It's pulling on the front panel when you have weight in the drawer that puts a lot of strain on the screws. that's why I used straps to pull on the side panels. weasel_110
I put an insert of 15mm pine behind the drawer front, the base and both sides screw into this!
