Why not just use a Redarc ?

Battery 1 (main gets chargedfrom the alternator) Battery 2 (Auxillary) then gets charged,

Battery 1 will discharge to Battery 2 down to 12.8 volts and then the Redarc will switch off to cease to supply power to Battery 2 so you will always have enough charge to start.

I've had one in my charging system now for over 2 years and never had a problem, the deep cell auxillary supplies power to a 40 litre fridge/freezer, 240 volt inverter, the winch and all other auxillary points such as fixed LED external tent lighting and the satellite phone. The main battery just handles starting, driving lights, engine, guages and radio.

Main feed to second battery as normal, you need to install a second 'charge light' and wire this with a live feed from the battery to one side and the other to the connection on the alternator. You do NOT need to isolate the second alternator from the vehicle as some people will have you believe!
