odometer reading jumped 50k after changing the water pump and radiator

At the end of January 2014 I bought a 2003 Freelander 2.5l V6 with just over 80k miles on the odometer. In the beginning of May it had under 81500 miles but overheated when the weather warmed up and outside temperatures reached the high 90 degrees (I live in Southern California). I replaced the thermostat but found that the water pumped had developed a leak and the water kept leaking out. I replaced the water pump to stop the leak and also replaced the radiator and radiator cap (on the reservoir tank). This is when I found that the odometer reading jumped 50k to 134500 miles. How is this possible?

In addition, the engine performance is different. It sometimes misses and lacks power. Then it seems to be run well again.

It's extremely unlikely if not actually impossible. Suggest that you may have changed the odometer to read in Km instead of miles. It's about the right ratio.

Engine performance change is unconnected. Don't know anything about the V6 so cannot suggest specifics, but I would check electrics first.

There is a suggestion on other forums that you can switch between km and miles by holding down the trip reset button beyond the point where it zeroes.

Thanks for the info. I verified that the odometer is indeed now clocking kilometers instead of miles. I pressed the reset but it only zeros the trip meter and does not toggle between kilometers and miles. How do I change to miles instead of kilometers? What other forums have you been reading?
