I spoke to a chap who had done a fair bit of over landing on a bike and he said some interesting things around cost - around it being a state of mind to some extent, where by working a little the right times and moving on at the right times you could move towards a 'cost neutral' position. I'm not sure how easy that approach is in a car as opposed to a bike - or travelling as a family rather than alone - but it's an interesting perspective.
