mudmagnet
What should a ps pump feel like when you spin the pulley by hand should it spin freely or should there be some resistance. Mine turns by hand but is a little stiff and notchy
vulcan bomber
Should be smooth with slight resistance but not much.
oneandtwo
More importantly check for end float - see if the pulley can be pulled in and out of the pump. Once it has begun it just gets worse and the belt tends up running up to or over the pulley flange and trashing the belt.
Boydie
"Notchy" ?? I think your PS pump front ball bearing is kaput. This would give it a "notchy" feel as the pulley is turned, it should be smooth but with resistance as it's trying to pump the transmission fluid. mudmagnet
It's smooth if I just turn slow but can feel slight lumpiness when turned faster
Boydie
I still think that the front bearing has gone, it baffles me why the bearings in this pump are not lubricated by the transmission fluid with a ceramic mechanical seal external to the front bearing - obviously too sensible for LR to specify when they built the 300Tdi. Sheffield
I suspect the design of the pump was in the hands of the pump maker who supplied them to LR, not LR.
Boydie
Sheffield, your'e probably right, but ultimately the design criteria comes down to LR, if they specified a certain design then they would have been supplied it, unless of course the dreaded bean counters (accountants) decided to go for the cheaper option, which is quite common.
