  1. Hi all, I've 1 1997 P38 2.5d with a knackered gearbox. Will the R380 from a 300tdi Discovery fit ? Thanks in advance. Nige
  2. I had a similar cold starting issue on an old Mitsubishi Galant Turbo, any touch of the throttle meant removing the four screws holding the top of the single point injection plenum and mopping a pool of petrol up ! Massively over fueling.
  3. Excellent. been meaning to make one myself.
  4. Went the gearbox tunnel route as V8Pete described, easier than expected Blocked the tubes to the screen vent hoping it'll increase the heat flow to my feet, but thought afterwards it may be better to reroute them out the ends of the dash to provide side window demisting.
  5. Glass's Guide used to be the definitive for pricing, but according to the car dealers I know, these days they look on Autotrader etc at what similar vehicles are up for and sold for, eBay completed listings etc.
  6. Bought a screen and a pre-made loom with a Carling switch to match the ones already in my Mud console. What is the easiest or best route to install the harness ? It's a 1986 90. 1 - Out through front of battery box, over floor and find a way through dash ? 2 - Out through side of battery box, through transmission tunnel and find a way back in to dash through bulkhead ? Getting to the screen terminals is easy enough as I can hide the cables in the gap at base of screen frame. Any other suggestions, I don't particularly want to see the wiring if I can help it. Cheers, Nige
  7. Time for an update. Cleaned all the earths last week, no better, then three days ago suddenly developed a bad misfire. The tappet adjuster on No5 had snapped. Replaced it and suspected timing belt had slipped as the cause so replaced it yesteray. The cam was one tooth out, keyways fine with no play. However, it's still a PITA when cold. Noticed that it chuff out loads of black smoke when it finally fires up. May be time to look at temp sensors and pump pressures.
  8. No reason at all. I've done the same with long items, although not axle length things.
  9. Thanks, haven't checked the earth, will do in morning.
  10. Starts within two seconds when warm but when cold can often flatten the battery. New glow plugs, supply checked, plugs glow correctly. New lift pump. Compression over 200psi all cylinders, no change when oil in cylinders. Brand new battery. Replaced starter (second hand). Emissions tested on MOT machine and within limits. Bit stumped now so over to the collective for suggestions. Nige
  11. Not a VVT and don't have the MGF ECU. Removed idle valve, no difference and the valve can be seen opening. So that's every sensor etc now replaced so can only be ECU.
  12. Friend bought an 02 Freelander extremely cheap due to head gasket failure. Chap who had it removed the engine and bought a replacement from an MGF. He then had this engine reconditioned by a (alledged) engine shop but never got round to fitting it. We fitted it two weeks ago but cannot get the sod to run, it tries but that's all. All plugs are sparking and all injectors are spraying a nice pattern. Downpipes get hot so something it happening. Pull the injectors out and hold them half way over the ports and it will run very roughly but not rev. This implies it's running rich to me. Changed O2 sensor, MAP, temp, cam and crank sensors and still no joy. Compression is good and cam timing is definately correct. Unless I'm missing something it can only be ECU. I'm a mechanic by trade BTW but am absolutely stumped.
  13. Is it easier to remove the engine rather than the gear and transfer boxes ? I had to replace the engine on a K series Freelander and it was out in just over an hour and a half. Never done a Td4 though. I'll be working on a 2 post ramp with full workshop facilities. Thanks.
