small bit of wiring help

Recommended Posts

The crank relay coil is earthed via a black wire with a green stripe which goes to the terminal on the bulkhead inside the engine bay. This wire is used to inhibit the crank function when not in park on vehicles fitted with an automatic transmission. The engine won't crank unless it is earthed.

It took me about four hours to spot this one when I did my re-build....

Nick.

The relay is fitted to both manual and automatics - it carries the starter solenoid current so it does not have to go through the ignition switch. On manual vehicles, the bullet on the end of the black-green wire is permanently connected to a black wire from the main bulkhead earth terminal. On automatics, it is connected to a switch which is only closed when the gearbox is in 'P'.
