  1. The transmission gets wound up if the VCU fails....some do, some don't.

I'm on my second Freelander. The last one did nearly 100k miles and didn't have a problem with the VCU. This one has done 75k and is still perfect, and I do a 48 mile cross county commmute to work.

There is a lot of "cr*p" given about the Freelander transmission system, invariably by those who know little about it. Like any car, if you have a good one, no problem, but ALL cars are not perfect!! Don't worry!!

  2. Leave it with the full 4 whheel drive system in place. It increases the stability of the car and makes it much easier to pull away, especially with a 'van on the back. I have never heard of anyone having a problem towing for long distances with the Freelander, and as has been siad the fuel saving will be minimal.

  3. Dorsetfreelander,

LAND ROVER's instructions are very plain in the Owners Handbook:

If fitted in pairs new tyres MUST alway be fitted to the REAR axle ONLY. Failure to do so can result in damage to the VCU and IRD.

Of course Michelin recommend you buy 4 tyres every time.....it makes them money. No other tyre manufacturer states it.

  4. GET YOUR NEW TYRES FITTED TO THE REAR AXLE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Failure to do so can result in severe damage to the transmission system and is almost certainly the cause of the noise and vibration.

This is as instructed by Land Rover in the handbook.

You do not need to buy 4 tyres, just always make sure that new tyres, or tyres with the greatest circumference are ALWAYS fitted to the rear axle.

  5. ok...this is an even more stupid question...remebering what I said about not knowing anything...

when you first start the engine, is the cooling fan behind the radiator supposed to start straight off, or does it come on when its hot etc...as the fan isnt going when I start the car,

    cheers again

No the fan only comes on when the car is hot. It is thermostatically controlled.

  6. They are supposed to stop any vibration that "might" be present, but as some cars don't have them fitted anyway, and plenty in the Freelander Club have cut theirs off, I wouldn't worry to much about it.
