  1. Couple of ideas - either you could get a solar powered trickle charger - they plug into the cigarette lighter, and are avaliable from most accessory shops. They provide so little current that they wouldn't fry your batteries - they would just keep them topped up.

one thing to be careful about with this option is that a lot of cars switch off the power supply to the cigarette lighter when the ignition is off this is true of disco 1's ;) so wouldn't mind betting its across the range so check first before conecting a solar panel/gharger by this route otherwise you maybe wasting your time

  2. ...problem being there's a D-Lander, Tomcat and Ibex so far! lol! ...suppose they could carry a bit each and strap the rest to the roof :lol:;)

funny thats just what i was going to say. as for hiking anywhere whilst i'm willing poss 2 others might the ones left may prefer to chew through there own arm "don't do walking thats what i bought a car for"

as for route and speeds nothings set we're going to take it as it comes theres thing we'd like to do but nothings rigid

  3. Get your ferry to Hamburg so you can stock up on cheap quality German beer. I went at a similar time of year, but to Swedish Lapland. Drove to Halmstad, then caught a 24 hour train via Gothenberg. Stayed in a mountain lodge within the arctic circle. Skidoos, huskies and ice fishing. It was great, you will love it. Temps will be a bit lower at night than you are expecting! If there are a few of you together, you will be able to rent rooms at mountain stations with bunks, similar to hostels. It was so cold in March you were not allowed to pour water down the sinks, as they said the pipes were frozen in the earth!

thanks mountain cabins were aleays going to be an option. we're takeing the ferry to burgen otherwise we won't have enough time :( did you take/need snow chains or were the roads clear enough to not need the any advice you can give would be apprecated

    thanks

  4. theres a group of nutters  from the shires going to norway on the 31st march returning to uk 13th april we're planning to drive to tromso to see the northern lights via nord kapp if its open. we will be camping for the most part so a little chilly  temps for that time are about the same as mid winter here. it's likely to be a round trip of about 3000 miles mainly road miles but bear in mind there should be a lot of snow around. :) costs are approx but its £430 for the ferry fuel is about the same as here food is slightly more and beer is extorsionate sorry chaps, so all in 2 people in one truck it's looking to be about £1500-£2000. if your interested let me know we've got 3 definates and 2 maybes would like to have a max of 6 trucks.

come on you know you want to!!!!

  5. there's a group of us from the shires going to lapland the begining of april to play in the snow not planning on taking skis though as there's no spare room in my tomcat and as the other trucks going so far are a Dlander and an ibex its not looking good on the sking front oh and did i mention were camping we must be mad!!!!!!

  6. Im about to chamge my trans case on my 90 to a 1.4 because apparantly i have a 1.6 on at the moment and its far to low. where does it say on the case the ratio?

lying on my back ive looked to the left of the drum, under the blaking plate for a over drive and i cant see anything :(

normally 90's have a 1.44:1 ratio 110's a 1.41:1 and discos/rangeys 1.22:1 200tdi onwards its on a sticker on the lower edge of the rear face of the transfer box just to the left of the drum looking fowards i have a feeling they may have put a 1.6:1 in either turbo diesels and or series but i'm not sure on that  failing that if you put it in 4th gear high range (this should be 1:1) with the ignition off and roll it forwards you can see how many times the crank goes round

    hope this helps mike :)

  7. mmmmmmmmmm fire, i likes fire - its warm when camping. now if i take my bench grinder (which i dont have) camping i wont need matches... that should save space? :D

i maybe telling some to suck eggs  but if i remember correctly you sould never grind non ferous metals on a bench grinder as particals get stuck in the wheel then expand with the heat of grinding thus causing the wheel to shatter which is nearly as messy as a fire ball

  8. As I am most likely down the day before, can we do a practice run with my EP9 just so I can see how little current it draws...

my EP9 will be there mined might need more dead weight as my tomcat has a habit of sliding something to do with lack of weight so i'm told don't know what they mean

  9. Hi People.

Anyone got the part number for the external rubber weather strip, that seals between the glass & door body, on the rear offside passenger door.

    disco is a 1994 300Tdi 5 door variant.

    thanks very much.

not sure which side you mean offside or passager side rear? but part no's for the rubber strip between the top of the door skin and the glass is BTR8866 OUTER-RH and BTR8867 OUTER-LH

  10. Not too fussed about wheelbase, just trying to compare against a "typical" challenge vehicle

i know its not a challage truck but what about popays its a 90 caged winched 2" lift etc only little tyres but haven't you got 35's on the ibex just a thought

  11. when i registered my tomcat (was a disco) i had to fill in the form and send a cheque for an SVA they then gave me a date for a VIC as i had the correct no of points but they needed to check to decide. i had already MOTed and insured it due to misinformation turned up points we checked off and the only part of the chassis he showed any interest in was the wheelbase, as this is unchanged no probs so new tax was paid SVA cheque riped up and new log book saying tomcat in post. :D

so you tell me because i know other people have had differing experances

as for SVA/MOTs you have to get the car SVAed then MOTed but most test stations will do the MOT after they have finished the SVA (they charge you for SVA and MOT at standard rates)

hope this helps if not your welcome to PM me if you want

rest of trip was good not many lanes though maybe more next time

the short rear i got was a new one was quoted £120+vat but got it for £90+vat which is why i gave you chassis no's prehaps you can find a second hand set at a better price

  16. It could be the problem, as the kero is no where near as oily as diesel, so depending on the mix, the fuel pump might have been running dry, as there was not enough lubricity in the mix.

A few years back when I was working for a certain employer, we were able to use all the waste avtur that we drained from aircraft, some diesels ran perfectly on straight avtur (which is basically kero, with some additives), and on some it destroyed the fuel pump due to lack of lubrication, so the fix was to put and extra litre of so of oil in with the fuel to avoid the problem.

I think it was the land cruisers that did`nt like running on it straight.

the peugot/citron 1.9 turbo diesel will run quite happly on avtur with the ocasional tank of diesel also discos will put up with a couple of tank fulls over a period of time not that i know of coarse oh and avtur has no pigment in it so its not going to alert customs tee hee

  17. Personally, I know I'm heading for an SVA and a Q-plate and I couldn't care less. If there are problems of non-conformity I have no issue with bringing my 'creation' into line. The only issue which worries me slightly is insurance.

Are there many options of companies willing to insure Q-plated cars? Is it trickier if you have a more extreme set-up (bigger engine or whatever)?

People's experience of this would be interesting.

    Ta, Al.

i've built several cars now some Q plated some SVA'ed and some just VIC'ed. to be honest the "rules" have a lot of grey areas and are open to a lot of debate thus things can vairy a lot from place to place to make my point i built an ABS freestyle as did my brother mine was SVA'ed in taunton and passed my brothers which was identical bar colour failed at southampton so go figuer my tomcat on the other hand acording to the DVLA only needed a VIC which is a check carried out at your local DVLA office to see that what you tell them on paper is what you have on the road as for insurance just use a company that does kit cars as Q plates aren't a problem for them

    hope this helps mike
